Are your products free from parabens and sulfates?

Yes, our products are free from Parabens and Sulfates. Sulfates are chemicals used as cleansing agents. When used in shampoos; they are primarily designed to dissolve dirt. Their abrasive nature can lead to the erosion of the hair and scalp’s natural oils, leaving the hair dry, the scalp irritated and with potential hair loss. Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives for cosmetic products. Over the years, their safety for personal care use has been under huge scrutiny, as they have been linked to a variety of health issues. Be sure to check out our blog on why sulphates are harmful for your natural hair

I’m experiencing dry, itchy and dandruff ridden scalp. What can Afrodite Organics offer?

Afrodite offers Detox & Healing Bentonite Clay. This is used once a month in place of your shampoo or cleanser. This will assist in detoxing the scalp, promotes hair growth and enhances curl definition as well. In addition, we also offer the Hydrating Mist. It contains peppermint & Tea Tree Oil, and fights dandruff and itch for a soothed, and hydrated scalp. Suitable for both braids and un-braided hair as a hydrant for both scalp and hair.

Do you have a moisture treatment for dry, brittle hair?

Yes we do. Our Berry Bliss Deep Conditioner is a Moisture Treatment Mask. It is formulated to infuse intense moisture deep into the hair shaft to soften and moisturize dry, brittle hair.

For dry and tangled hair, it’s also best to pre-poo your hair with the hydrating mist and herbal growth elixir the night before, then wash your hair with warm water and the lemongrass conditioning crème cleanser. Warm water opens your hair follicle for hydration and nutrients to enter, while Paraben & sulfate free shampoo is delicate on your hair and scalp and cleanses them without excessively drying them. Then apply the Berry Bliss Deep Conditioning Treatment.

What can I use to stimulate hair growth?

Keep your scalp clean and healthy by washing your hair at least once weekly (or more frequently depending on your hair texture). Then massage your scalp with the herbal growth elixir at least once a week using your fingers or a hair massaging tool. This promotes blood circulation for your scalp and helps stimulate hair growth.

Trim your hair regularly (every 6-8 weeks). The frizzy, dry, coarse ends at the very bottom of your hair is the unhealthy hair that needs to go. You can softly twist your hair to expose them better and snip those off, leaving behind only neat ends.

Are your products suitable for low or high porosity hair?

Our products are suitable for all types of hair porosity, and here’s why: hair porosity speaks to how easily products and/or moisture is absorbed into or lost out of the hair strands. What is more important to note in this regard is the routine and/or process followed for looking after your hair, in conjunction with careful product choices.

Low porosity hair has a tightly bound cuticle layer, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate (but also difficult for moisture to escape, once it’s in your hair). What is usually important is the use of indirect heat on the hair during deep conditioning and/or protein treatments to help open up the hair cuticle to allow products and nutrients to be absorbed into the hair shaft. So use a heat cap or shower cap in conjunction with an overhead heat dryer during your deep conditioning and protein treatments. A hot oil treatment using the Afrodite herbal growth elixir is also a great option. Hot Oil Treatment is simply putting oil all over the hair then incorporating heat. This allows the oil to penetrate the hair shaft for intense hydration that your low porosity hair may need.

Then follow on with this combo of 3 daily care products: Milk & Honey Leave in conditioner, Mango dream butter cream and Aloe & Moringa Curl defining jelly. These are suitable for daily use for your LOC or LCO method for daily hydration, moisture infusion and sealing in for moisture retention.

High porosity hair, on the other hand, has gaps and holes in the cuticle, allowing moisture to easily pass in and out. While hot oil treatment is popularly used for low porosity hair, it is also important to incorporate into high porosity hair regimes for maximum moisture and nutritional absorption.

Can I use Afrodite products for relaxed hair?

Yes, Afrodite products are great for relaxed hair. Relaxers straighten the hair but weaken the hair shaft. What this means is that nutritional products that contain powerful nourishing ingredients are necessary for healthy, relaxed hair, which makes Afrodite’s thoughtfully formulated hair care range even that much more necessary to use on relaxed hair. All the products in our range can be used for relaxed hair to infuse nutrition and moisture that might have been lost during the process of chemically straightening hair. The Milk & Honey Leave-In Conditioner is a more nutritional alternative to a typical hair moisturizer, with hydrating and softening properties. The Mango Dream Moisturising Butter Cream helps in styling and shaping the hair while adding shine and locking in moisture. The herbal growth elixir serves a dual purpose of repairing the hair as well as increasing resistance from breakage.

What products can I use for hair that has been colored?

“Colour doesn't change the texture of the hair, but bleach definitely does. The reason for that is because bleach is removing the melanin in your hair that’s protecting it. The lighter the hair is, the more exposed the hair will be, which makes the hair on the dryer side”, Elena. (Janell Hickman November 27, 2019). Conditioning the hair is top priority. Ensure you use Deep Conditioner on your wash days to avoid extreme dryness and brittleness of hair. Also use a leave-in conditioner to add a topical moisture and hydration to the hair. Avoid washing your hair every day which could lead to fading out the colour, but which could also contribute to stripping hair off its natural much needed oils after coloring. Use moisture sealants such as Mango Dream Butter Cream and/or Aloe & Moringa Curl defining Jelly to ensure the hydration you put into the hair is locked in throughout the day.
